The goal is not to move from one static model to another static model. It is not to move from being a traditional church that is not changing to becoming a missional church that is not changing. The goal is not to become a 9Marks church that is not changing. The goal is to become an ever-changing church—from one glory to the next.
What’s wrong with this metaphor?
As helpful as this metaphor is, it misses the point in one regard. Change is about a thousand little pushes, true enough. It is also about a thousand things we try that don’t end up working. It is about trying and failing, experimenting and dabbling and trying some more stuff and eventually stumbling on some things that work. It is the combination of many small improvements made after many small failures that makes the difference.
