What Does the Bible Mean When It Says “Born Again”?
Few phrases in Christianity are as central—and sometimes as misunderstood—as being “born again.” It is a phrase Jesus Himself used to explain the doorway into God’s kingdom. But what does it really mean to be born again, and how does it change the way we live?
Jesus Explains the New Birth
In John 3, Jesus has a conversation with Nicodemus, a respected religious leader. Nicodemus is puzzled when Jesus says, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again” (John 3:3). Jesus continues, “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit” (John 3:6).
Being born again is not about religion, rituals, or moral effort. It is a spiritual transformation—a rebirth initiated by the Holy Spirit. It is a moment when God takes our old, broken self and creates something new.
A Life Transformed
Being born again changes everything. It doesn’t mean that life becomes easy, but it does mean that our hearts, desires, and priorities are reshaped. The Apostle Paul describes this transformation: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
This new life is marked by a desire to love God, love others, and follow Christ daily. It begins internally, in the heart and mind, but it inevitably flows into action, affecting choices, relationships, and character.
A True Story of Being Born Again
In 2005, a man named Michael struggled with anger, addiction, and a sense of hopelessness. He had grown up in a church but never felt connected to God personally. One night, a friend shared John 3:16 with him and explained what it meant to be born again.
That night, Michael prayed: “Jesus, I want to be born again. I want You to change my life.” He describes the moment as a quiet peace settling over him. The transformation wasn’t instant in every habit or emotion, but gradually, he began to experience hope, patience, and joy he had never known. His relationships began to heal, and he found purpose in helping others struggling with addiction.
Michael’s story illustrates that being born again is not just a theological concept—it is a living reality, a radical new beginning orchestrated by God.
What Being Born Again Means for Daily Life
The new birth is not simply a momentary experience; it is a journey. It affects:
-
Perspective: Seeing life, trials, and relationships through God’s eyes.
-
Desires: Wanting God’s will more than personal comfort or recognition.
-
Actions: Living in love, humility, and service to others.
Jesus promises that those born again are alive in the Spirit, able to live fully in God’s kingdom now while anticipating its fulfillment in eternity.
A Doorway and a Transformation
Being born again is the entry point to a relationship with God, but it also begins a lifelong process of spiritual growth. It is more than religion; it is resurrection life in the present.
Being born again isn’t just starting over—it’s starting new with God shaping every part of your life.
