Podcasts can change your life

If you like listening to sermons, and like free, you will love podcasts. They make listening to sermons quick, easy, automatic and free.

I have been a sermon junkie most of my adult life. I used to subscribe to these sermons through a company in Albuquerque that would send you 3 sermons on tape. After you listened to those, they would send you 3 more. You could do this as often as you like for $5 a month. I kept 4 memberships going. It was like Netflix for sermons.

Then CDs replaced cassettes and things got a little more expensive, but I continued to listen to sermons whenever I could get a hold of them.

Then came the MP3 and Podcast. My wife made my day one day with this anniversary gifts. We pulled up in front of Best Buy and she said to me, "Just go in and get whatever you want."

I got my first IPOD.

After a little clicking around, I worked out how to listen to sermons via podcasts. Since then I have listened to hundreds of hundreds of sermons--all free.

Here are a few steps you can take to get your favorite preacher on your favorite MP3 player. (I am going to walk through the steps using ITunes and an IPOD. Other devices have similar steps.)

Download and install ITunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/ This is FREE.

Go to the store. Don't let the word store scare you off. You are not going to buy anything. Keep your debit card in your wallet.

Search for whatever preacher you like. You can search for me if you want, although, why would you want to? There are a lot better preachers out there. I listen to John Ortberg, Andy Stanley, Bill Hybels and Kenton Beshore. Most of the preachers you have heard of have podcasts. By the way, you ought to set up a podcast for your sermons if you are a pastor. Fairly easy and free.

Hit the subscribe button. This will put the newest episodes on your computer every time you open ITunes. From there, you could listen to them from your computer. The next step will all you to take them with you.

Plug in your IPOD to your computer. From within ITunes, click on your IPOD. Click on the Podcast tab. From here, you can define how many of what podcasts you want to go onto your IPOD.

From here, everything is automatic. Every time you plug in your IPOD it will load ITunes, see if there is any new content available, delete the sermons you have listened to and replace them with new sermons. Quick. Easy. Automatic. Free.

Hint: when you listen to the sermons, let them go all the way to the end. This way, the IPOD will recognize them as listened to and will take them off. If you restart that sermon, it will recognize you are in the middle of that sermon and will assume you want to listen to it again. Let the sermon play to the very end.

The Bible says:

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (NIV) 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

If Moses were writing today, he might include, "Upload them onto your IPOD."
